becoming a wedding planner/ event coordinator
Name: Lindsey
Question:
My name is Lindsey, I am 23, and I was searching the internet for wedding planners/ coordinators because I would like to get into the business. I would like to know how to get a good start in this business, I do have some experience in certain ways; I've been bartending for the past few years, I have bartended weddings and I have a couple this summer I will be working at. I have also worked as a caterer in a hotel, booking meeting rooms, served banquets, set up banquets. I am also an esthetician, I got my BC provincial certificate in 2003, and have been working off and on, mostly as favors to friends for their weddings or other events (graduation, even big dates). I would like to gain more knowledge about how to start my own business, or if the best way to go is to work for another company, and what qualifications I would need to get a job. I would be grateful if you could help me out a little, just so I have a better idea of what I am getting into. Thank you for taking the time to read my email
Sincerely,
Lindsey Neill
Hi Lindsey and thanks for the great email! The first and most important thing to do when trying to get into the wedding planning business is to become an apprentice to a wedding planner or offer to do some volenteer work for a wedding planning company. There you can get a few weddings under your belt, and have some weddings in your "portfolio" before you try to get out into the world and do them on your own. There are alot of Planners that will love the extra help so it really shouldn't be a problem finding someone who will have you as an apprentice. Make up a resume, as you seem to have alot of experience with many aspects of the planning already and get going on it. I think you will do great!
Good Luck!
