"black tie welcomed"

Name: Lynn
Question:

We just received an invitation to my husband's nephew's wedding. On the invitation it says, "black tie welcomed". Exactly, what does that mean? I understand the reception is being held in a very upscale hall.

Hi Lynn, Thank you for submitting your question, it is a good one and most people don't really understand the "Black Tie Welcomed" statement. Basically it means that the bride and groom would prefer their guests to be dressed formally. No jeans and a nice dress shirt at this function. Nice dresses or other formal attire for the ladies and suits and ties for the men is generally what that means.
