The name, Promise rings, indicates that this ring is exchanged between people for continuing relationships, serious and promising ones. These are of sentimental value. Promising rings can be exchanged between people in love, friendship, or with commitment to live together or any other serious relationship. This ring can be exchanged between any sex of any age, race, creed, or religion, who understand and believe in this sentiment. Wearing this ring means that one is committed to the person who has given this ring. Any finger of right or left hand can be used for wearing this, however, as the left ring finger nerve connects directly to the heart, it is preferred sentimentally.
Promise rings are more common in young people than in more matured couple. These rings have religious sentiment also. Certain religions that preach against premarital sex practice the exchange of rings to support their preaching. When the couple is ready to be married, then this promise ring is substituted or replaced by true promise ring: engagement or wedding ring. The seriousness of the relationship is also measured by the size, value, and gem used in the ring. These rings are not as common as friendship, engagement or wedding rings in most of the countries; however, this concept is catching up with younger generation, particularly with the school goers.
Promise rings are available in different metals like gold, silver, platinum, titanium and so on with either diamond or gem or color stones embedded in them. These rings like other occasions’ rings can be custom-made. These are also available on the web sites for purchase apart from the traditional jewelry shops. These rings have lot of meanings of commitment. For example, it could mean:
• One would be faithful to the other
• One would keep up a specific secret of the other
• One would keep up the promise given to the other
• One would be there for the other, always
• One would remain a friend forever
• One is in love with other
• One would remain loyal to the other in the relationship one is in, and so on.
However, it is very important that the person receiving it should be explained the purpose of being given. This would not give rise to assumptions, confusions or unhappiness from either side. It is important that one should not thrust the ring on the other, and the understanding should be mutual.
